세계 최대 규모의 컴퓨터 관련 박람회로써 1979년 시작하여 지금에 이르며,
매년 11월에 개최된다.
COMDEX ( 컴퓨터 딜러들의 전시회란 뜻의 Computer Dealers Expositon 의 약자이다 )
전 세계에서 신 기술 개발로 혈전을 벌이고 있는 기업들이 매년 11월에 자신들의 신제품을
선 보이면서, 컴퓨터 소프트웨어(S/W), 하드웨어(H/W), 네트워크 제품등 수많은 신제품들이 전시 된다. 전시회 기간동안 이 컨벤션으로 라스베가스를 찾는사람이 30만명( 2002년) 이었다고 하는데 테러 사건이후인 2001년과 2002년의 행사에는 절반 정도인13 만명 정도가 찾았다고 한다.

2000년에는 우리나라에서는 LG전자, 삼성전자 등 150여개 이상의 업체들이 참가하였고
2002년에는 100 여개 업체가 참가 했다.

한국의 각 여행사별로 라스베가스 왕복 항공권을 포함하여 팩케이지로된 상품을 내놓고 있어 사업관련하여 많은 한국 사람들이 몰려온다. 그리고 한 바탕 난리를 치고 간다.
저 개인적으로는 한국에 있을 때에는 우리나라의 기술도 제법 세계적인줄 알았는데, 이 박람회를 한번 보는 순간 우리나라의 정확한 현주소를 알 게 되었다. 한국에서 컴퓨터 관련 사업 하시는분은 꼭 한번 구경하시기 바랍니다. 일본과 미국을 따라갈려면 우째해야 하느지를 보여주는 교육장으로 생각하시고 열심히 둘려 보시기 바랍니다.

느껴야 할점 (1) 다양한 인종들 중에서 나는 과연 어느 위치쯤 되나 ?

                  (4) 과연 이놈의 컴퓨터가 인간을 어디까지 끌고 갈까 ?

다음은 빌 게이츠 마이크로소프트(MS) 회장의 개막 기조연설을 요약한 신문 기사중 일부이다.

Gates said there was a negative perception of high tech following the collapse of the tech bubble more than two years ago.

"Even though we're in an economic downturn, we're in an innovation upturn," he said. "I believe people are dramatically underestimating all the innovation going on in our industry, all the great products that are on the way, and the positive contribution that technology is making to our economy."

Gates said the industry is moving away from focusing on personal computers and instead seeks to move into a world of personal computing -- where portable and everyday gadgets can perform tasks typically run on full-powered systems.

Smart Personal Objects Technology ( SPOT) would empower everyday devices to draw on the information from the Internet. Unlike Internet appliances and other fantasies of the dot-com boom, their functionality would be more focused.

A travel alarm clock, for instance, would automatically detect its time zone and set itself accordingly. It also could pull up news, weather and other local information. The "smart" pen also would pull content from the Internet.

Such products are expected to be made available within a year. Prices were not announced but are expected to be in the higher range of their unconnected counterparts.

Gates also showed off portable, cordless monitors that would work in the wireless networks that are increasingly popping up at homes.

Smart Displays, which would start at $999, are flat-panel monitors that detach from a desktop and can be moved across the room. Like the Tablet PCs released earlier this month, their screens can be used as a writing surface.

But unlike the tablets, Smart Displays would not be standalone computers. They would store data on and use the computing power of a regular desktop computer running Windows XP Professional.
